IED Disposal (IEDD)

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are a constantly evolving threat in conflict zones around the world. Explosive Learning Solutions has recognised experts in dealing with the threat of IEDs, and their disposal. We have a wealth of current operational experience from some of the world's most challenging environments.

IEDD is a key C-IED capability and militarily may consist of a joint capability composed from an EOD team, military search, working dogs and electronic counter measures (ECM). The military capability has been grown from the EOD capability that clears the ground to enable operational mobility.

Homeland security is centred on national security, saving life and pursuing the legal process where IEDD capability may take several forms and be grown from and delivered by several agencies. Recent operations and cross border international threats have seen a coming together in IEDD capability with an emphasis on exploitation and forensic retrieval. Consideration of developing or adapting an IEDD capability must be founded on a requirements assessment matched to potential threats.

There is no one single solution and IEDD capability must consider and be proofed against adaptive threats. This will influence the correct equipment and training requirements specifications, for example training in:

  • IEDD Equipment -This training provides an integration of the team use of EOD equipment in an IEDD environment, specific to role and threat IEDD equipment and the use of small, medium and large unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) / remotely operated vehicles (ROV) to observe, investigate and attack targets.
  • IEDD Homeland Security - Team operation and command of an incident response including multi-agency cooperation set in a law enforcement support context. The operating environment for homeland security would be a permissive where the IEDD team and other first responders are not subject to direct threats in the conduct of their duties.
  • IEDD High Threat - Whilst IEDs are deemed to be a feature of all future operations then high threat refers to team operation and command in a semi-permissive environment. This is taken to mean an environment where the law enforcement support context is maintained yet IEDD teams and first responders are subject to direct threat because of and in the conduct of their duties.
  • IEDD Unit Trainer - IEDD is a perishable skillset with both the practical use and application of equipment and the cognitive command and decision making processes requiring rehearsal and practise. IEDD capability does not stop at the procurement of equipment and adaptive threats require adaptive training at the responding unit level. All units require an responsible or appointed officer to plan and conduct routine IEDD training.
